Reiki is an energy healing modality that derives from Japan. The word Reiki itself is a combination of two Japanese words. Rei – which means the higher power. Ki – which means life force energy. So, Reiki is a spiritually guided life force energy. It is administered by “laying hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen life force energy flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. When one’s life force energy is low, one is more prone to get ill, have physical ailments or mental stressors. Reiki is great to aid relaxation, assist in the body’s natural healing processes, and develop emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.
When one receives a Reiki treatment, it is like being bathed in a beautiful blanket of warm light as energy flows through and around you. Reiki penetrates through both the body and soul, treating one on the physical, mental and spiritual level. It is a great modality to be used alongside other treatments, as well.
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion and it has no dogma. There is nothing that you have to believe in order to learn or use Reiki, making Reiki a great form of treatment for everyone of all walks of life.
What happens during a Reiki session?
A typical Reiki session lasts anywhere from 30 – 90 min. During your first appointment, you will meet with your Reiki practitioner. You will have a short discussion, going over the process and your expectations. Let your practitioner know about any symptoms you want addressed or if there are places in the body on which you’d like for them to focus on. Also, it is important to let the practitioner know if you have any injuries or places that are sensitive to touch.
You will then be instructed to lie down on a table. I like to ease into the session with a light meditation through singing bowls before I get started with my hands. I also like to use essential oils to further promote relaxation. I will also play light, soothing music to set the ambiance. The practitioner will then move their hands around your body. They may touch you lightly or have their hands just above your body.
Reiki can also be done remotely in the form of Distant Reiki. These treatments are just as effective as in-person treatments, allowing patients to receive healing from afar. Distant Reiki works according to the Hermetic Law of Similarity, which holds that we are all connected, as we are all energy matter and part of a larger whole. As such, invoking this law during a distance Reiki session allows the practitioner to link an object to the energy field of the recipient.
You may experience sensations in the body, such as heat or tingling. Some people even report seeing visualizations such as colors or pictures.
How to prepare for your session?
Wear comfortable clothes. Remove your shoes, jewelry and glasses before the session. Keep your phone switched off. Avoid drinking any alcohol at least 24 hours prior to the session.
What to expect after your session?
Drink plenty of water after your session. Some people feel calm, peaceful or energized. You may also feel tired. Some people also go through a sort of purging, where they may cry and release any pent up energy or emotions. If this happens, welcome it and allow for it to flow through you.
